Florence in Felixstowe

Felixstowe is the one town on our list where the convertible roof stops being a nice extra and becomes the reason people book. A drive along the seafront with the top down, the sea on one side and the Edwardian gardens on the other, is a genuinely different arrival from a black car with the windows up.

We know the town's run well: Florence has taken a bride and her parents from a house off the Walton side to St Peter and St Paul's on Church Road, then the couple on to the Conservative Club on High Road West for the reception. Three passengers fit with the front seat left in, which is what that day called for.

She is a Nissan Figaro, a soft-top classic in mint green with cream leather inside. She has air conditioning for the days when the sea breeze does not arrive, and the roof goes up in a minute if it does something worse than that – which on the Suffolk coast it occasionally will.

Getting to Felixstowe

Bedfield to Felixstowe is around 27 miles, about 45 minutes via the A12 and A14. The whole town is inside our standard coverage, along with Trimley, Walton and the Ferry.
